The PIDA 2022  Labelling & Decoration Design of the Year award recognises the addition of content to a pack which creates a unique or innovative appearance, function or communication. This may include labels, sleeves, tags, coding/markings, etching, directly applied inks or by any other similar process.

There's a high level of  innovation and investment in enhancing label printing and pack decoration technologies -- and this investment is driven by demand from brand owners who know that packaging is a powerful persuader, that you have to dress your product for success. We’re seeing beautiful foiling finishes, special substrates, embossing and debossing… but more than that, today the label or printed pack is a recognised platform for engaging directly with the consumer via smart technologies, delivering experiences and important information directly to their smart devices via the pack. Adding the dimension of intelligent packaging has taken this category to a whole new level.

This year, in the Labelling & Decoration Design category, a bronze award went to Result Group for its Hungry Jack’s Uno Promotion, and a silver to Billson’s for the Billson’s Christmas Gin label.

Caps & Closures took out the gold for its ID-Shield Anti-Counterfeit System, designed to address the challenges Australian product manufacturers and exporters face from lookalike and counterfeit product in their markets.

Creating a unique and innovative holographic branding system, ID-Shield is effective in anti-counterfeiting and brand communication. The technology is fully integrated, created in-mould as the product is manufactured, with no added materials, adhesives, inks or printing processes.

The functionality of the design boosts product appeal, strengthens consumer confidence in the genuine product, and conveniently works in conjunction with all other tamper-evidence devices found in modern packaging.

The approach to image creation using ID-Shield means that there is now much greater freedom in a client’s choice of colours, graphics, visual effects, security measures, image position, size and shape to deliver a consumer-captivating demonstration of originality and creativity, adding value to the brand.

Food & Drink Business

Sydney-based biotech company, All G, has secured regulatory approval in China to sell recombinant (made from microbes, not cows) lactoferrin. CEO Jan Pacas says All G is the first company in the world to receive the approval, and recombinant human lactoferrin is “next in line”.

Fonterra Co-operative Group has announced the company is on track to meet its climate targets, and has turned off the coal boiler at its Waitoa site, making its North Island manufacturing entirely coal free.

Canola oil producer, Riverina Oils & Bio Energy (ROBE), has partnered with Australian renewable energy retailer, Flow Power, to power its operations with solar energy – a major step towards enhancing sustainability of its products.
