The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), in partnership with Informa Markets, will once again be holding the annual Philippines Packaging Forum on days one and three of ProPak Philippines 2024, held from 31 January to 2 February. It will also hold two mini training courses on day three.

The forum will see speakers from the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Australia and the Netherlands share their knowledge  on a wide range of topics including the circular economy for packaging, the current state of play for sustainable packaging and also circular design, active & intelligent packaging, sustainability trends and innovations for plastics including creating circularity for flexible packaging, new developments in rigid packaging, trends and innovations in fibre and renewables, and more.

The Philippines Packaging Forum is free for all to attend, and all participants can attain points towards the Certified Packaging Professional designation and request a Certificate of Attendance.

Day 1 Session 1: Sustainability & Circular Packaging: Global & Regional Perspective

This session will discuss the global, regional and local state of play for packaging, recycling, sustainability and the circular economy through the eyes of the World Packaging Organisation (WPO), the Asian Packaging Federation (APF) and the Philippines Institute of Packaging (PIP). Find out what is happening in this space from across all corners of the globe including trends and barriers.

The speakers are: Nerida Kelton, vice president Sustainability & Save Food, WPO; Joseph Ross Jocson, president, APF; Virginia Robledo, president, PIP; Stefano Paolo Bunag, WPO board member & PIP.

Day 1 Session 2: Interactive Panel Discussion

This interactive panel discussion will help you to elevate your own professional development and that of your team. Learn from leading packaging experts on how to advance your core competencies in packaging and how to become a globally recognised Certified Packaging Professional.

The speakers are: Prof Pierre Pienaar, immediate past president, WPO, education director, AIP; Darell Chung, sustainable packaging manager South Asia, Downstream Milliken Asia; Ron Adrian Dionaldo, faculty of Central Philippine University, Ralph Moyle, education coordinator, AIP.

Day 3 Session 1: Trends and Innovations in Active & Intelligent Packaging

This session will cover the latest trends and innovations in Active & Intelligent Packaging including 2D and QR codes, thermochromic inks, time temperature indicators and more. Smart Packaging also has an important role to play in minimising food loss and waste, which will be discussed. 

The speakers are: Mervin Fonseca, solutions and engagement director, GS1 Philippines; Andrew Manly, communications director, Active & Intelligent Packaging Industry Association; Nerida Kelton, executive director AIP.

Day 3 Session 2: Trends in Fibre & Renewable Materials

This session will provide trends in Fibre & Renewable Materials including labels to meet sustainability targets locally and globally.

The speakers are: Ralph Moyle, education coordinator, AIP; Sudarat Jerachaimongkol, business development manager, Film & Special SBU, APAC UPM Raflatac.

Day 3 Session 3: Sustainability Trends and Innovations

This session will discuss the sustainability trends and innovations for plastics including creating circularity for flexible packaging, new developments in rigid packaging such as increasing PCR dosages for caps and closures and PS replacements.

The speakers are: Alan Adams, sustainability director APAC, SEE (Formerly Sealed Air); Phoebe Valdez, R&D manager, Amcor Flexible Philippines; Darell Chung, sustainable packaging manager South Asia, Downstream Milliken Asia.

Day 3 Session 4: Inclusivity in the Industry: Women in Packaging Panel Discussion

Come and hear from some inspiring women who have elevated their careers in the food, beverage, packaging and printing industries. The panel discussion will also showcase the packaging-related studies they have completed, the careers they have developed, and how you too can become an award-winning packaging technologist. More details on speakers to be made available shortly.

The AIP will also be offering two globally recognised mini training courses on the 1 February at ProPak Philippines.

The first course offered will be Sustainable Packaging Design Guidelines which will intersect with the second course Save Food Packaging Design Guidelines. All attendees will receive a Certificate of Attendance and also 6 points per course towards attaining the global Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation.

Mini Training Course 1: Sustainable Packaging Design Guidelines

The introduction to Sustainable Packaging Design Guidelines aims to enable companies to deep dive into their existing and new packaging development processes to ensure that the business is reducing the environmental footprint of all packaging where possible, and at the same time meeting global and local food waste and packaging waste targets.

The Sustainable Packaging Guidelines (SPGs) have been established to assist the design and manufacture of packaging that meets the sometimes-conflicting demands of the market, consumer protection and the environment. Sustainable packaging ultimately ensures that the design provides the lowest possible environmental impact compared to existing or conventional packaging. Sometimes achieving the lowest possible environmental impact can be challenging, particularly when balancing various environmental criteria with other functional and commercial considerations.

The mini training course will work through the 10 Sustainable Packaging Guidelines and showcase award-winning best practice examples from across the globe.

The AIP trainer will be Ralph Moyle, AIP’s education coordinator.

Mini Training Course 2: Save Food Packaging Design Guidelines

This mini course aims to assist businesses to actively design packaging to minimise food loss and waste. The Save Food Packaging design training course will provide the detailed guidelines, criteria, research and checklists to arm packaging technologists, designers, innovation teams, sustainability & environmental teams, sales, business development, design agencies, consultants, procurement and marketing & communications departments with the tools to integrate the roadmap into their product-packaging design.

The outcomes from this course will include more innovative and intuitive packaging that can minimise food loss and waste all the way to the household and ultimately lower environmental impacts across the value chain.

The AIP trainer will be Nerida Kelton, AIP’s executive director.

The Senate Economics Committee has rejected the Food Donations Bill that proposed a tax offset for companies donating excess food to food relief agencies rather than dumping it. While the bill had the potential to deliver the equivalent of 100 million meals to food relief organisations, the committee said it had “serious concerns” including the bill’s “generous” tax concessions. Food relief agencies and social welfare organisations have questioned the committee’s decision to reject the bill outright rather than make recommendations for amendments.  

The winners of the 62nd annual Australian Export Awards were announced in Canberra yesterday, featuring three winners from the food sector – including dessert manufacturer Frosty Boy Global, in the Agribusiness, Food and Beverages category.

Mondelēz International has appointed Toby Smith as President Japan, Australia and New Zealand, with the incumbent, Darren O’Brien, appointed Global Chief Corporate and Government Affairs officer.
