Dow has revealed the finalists for the 35th Packaging Innovation Awards (PIA), with winners to be announced at a ceremony on 24 October 2024 during Tokyo Pack. The winning entries will also be displayed at the exhibition from 23 to 25 October.

The Packaging Innovation Awards, one of the industry’s most respected competitions, has been running for over three decades. The awards celebrate advancements in packaging that demonstrate technological innovation, sustainability, and enhanced user experience.

The finalists were selected following a rigorous evaluation process conducted in June by a panel of 18 industry experts. These judges, who represent a broad spectrum of fields including design, technology, sustainability, and business strategy, assessed the entries based on their potential to influence the future of packaging.

Daniella Souza Miranda, global marketing director at Dow, noted an increase in submissions this year, stating, “The Packaging Innovation Awards received over 300 entries, almost double the previous edition. This surge in participation highlights the increasing drive for innovation within the industry.”

David Luttenberger, jury chairperson for the 35th PIA and global packaging director for Mintel Group Ltd, commented on the importance of recognising cutting-edge technology and the smart use of renewable materials. He said, “The evaluation process provided a glimpse into the future of packaging. We witnessed innovations that not only promote design for recyclability but also enhance the overall user experience. It’s crucial that the industry continues to push boundaries.”

The 28 finalists will be acknowledged as Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, or Special Award winners. Among the shortlisted entries are Amcor's AmPrima PE Plus for Coffee and SB-Constantia Flexibles India's EcoLamHighPlus for cereal packaging. A full list of finalists is available on Dow's website.

Dow, a sponsor of the Packaging Innovation Awards, remains uninvolved in the judging process to ensure impartiality and integrity.

The Senate Economics Committee has rejected the Food Donations Bill that proposed a tax offset for companies donating excess food to food relief agencies rather than dumping it. While the bill had the potential to deliver the equivalent of 100 million meals to food relief organisations, the committee said it had “serious concerns” including the bill’s “generous” tax concessions. Food relief agencies and social welfare organisations have questioned the committee’s decision to reject the bill outright rather than make recommendations for amendments.
