Ahead of the Easter weekend, PKN takes a look at some of the various confectionery initiatives hitting the shelves, with both Nestle and Mondelez making significant reductions in packaging materials.
Nestle has released a new Incredible Egg range for this year's Easter: KitKat Incredible Egg Hazelnut Toffee Crisp, Allen’s Incredible Egg Popping Party, and the Smarties Smashup Incredible Egg.
Nestle head of marketing Confectionery, Melanie Chen, said, "There’s something for everyone this Easter, whether you’re a KitKat fan, lolly lover, or have a craving for the crunch of Smarties. The 'Incredible Eggs' are set to be the smash hit of any gathering and will make for the perfect Easter gift."
The new eggs are an expansion of its range, which previously committed to removing 50 per cent of material used for its packaging. The Nestle Easter boxes are packaged in 100 per cent recyclable material including cartonboard packaging, and minimal soft plastic and aluminium foil, which eliminates the plastic holders used by many competitor brands.
Mondelez also made similar commitments to its Easter egg packaging this year. The Cadbury Hollow Hunting Egg plastic crates will move to 12 and 24 pack cardboard cartons, which brand owner Mondelez says will amount to saving 131,000kg of plastic. Meanwhile, the plastic blister and excess cardboard in some Cadbury Easter Gift Boxes will also be removed, claiming a saving of over 200,000kg of packaging.
Darrell Lea's annual Easter range includes the Darrell Lea Bilby, which is sporting a new look, now wrapped in hot pink foil, with 20c from every Bilby sold donated to the Save The Bilby Fund. Easter egg selections include the Darrell Lea Speckled Eggs, Raspberry Foiled Solid Eggs, Coco Pops Foiled Solid Eggs, and the Darrell Lea HR Egg 100 & 1000s Milk Egg available in Raspberry or Mint.
