Voltaren Osteo Gel 12 Hourly is now available with a new easy to open cap, a design solution that has received a first-of-its kind accessibility certification from Arthritis Australia.

The introduction of the cap has been welcomed by Arthritis Australia’s Accessible Design Division as an important accessible design solution for Australians living with mild osteoarthritis.

New research finds that four in five respondents living with osteoarthritis experience constant pain, and one in three find opening jars amongst the most challenging daily tasks. The research findings highlight the need for more accessible product design solutions to support people living with arthritis, including the 2.2 million Australians living with osteoarthritis.

Jonathan Smithers, CEO of Arthritis Australia said: “It can be difficult to understand the impacts, both physically and emotionally, of arthritis conditions such as osteoarthritis unless you yourself, or a loved one, is living with it. There is no doubt that daily activities become more challenging, and we need to consider how we can help to ensure those living with mild osteoarthritis can access the solutions they need.”

Smithers said accessible design is a key focus at Arthritis Australia. “We want to work closely with industry, governments and other health consumer organisations to ensure we provide better solutions for the needs and abilities of the broader community. This includes not only people with arthritis, but older people and people with other health conditions that reduce their strength and dexterity. Our Easy to Open Certification program is an example of this, where a robust testing process is undertaken with arthritis consumers to ensure the product meets our high accessibility standards.”

Smithers said the new Voltaren cap, with its easy to open butterfly design, is an encouraging example of progress.

“This new cap considers the real challenges facing those living with mild osteoarthritis, and we are proud to announce that it is the first therapeutic product that has packaging certified as ‘Easy to Open’ by Arthritis Australia’s Accessible Design Division,” he said.

Voltaren Osteo Gel 12 Hourly’s new easy to open cap is the first and only medicinal packaging solution to have received Arthritis Australia’s Easy to Open Certification to date. It is available in pharmacies across Australia.

A national network for young grape and wine professionals has been launched, set to foster the next generation of winemakers, viticulturists, cellar door staff, wine judges and other roles in Australia’s wine sector.

A new bill was introduced to Parliament on 19 November, which offers a framework for regulating the sale or importation of organic goods in Australia, and stronger opportunities for exporting organic products.

The Senate Economics Committee has rejected the Food Donations Bill that proposed a tax offset for companies donating excess food to food relief agencies rather than dumping it. While the bill had the potential to deliver the equivalent of 100 million meals to food relief organisations, the committee said it had “serious concerns” including the bill’s “generous” tax concessions. Food relief agencies and social welfare organisations have questioned the committee’s decision to reject the bill outright rather than make recommendations for amendments.
