The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) will hold its seventh State of Industry webinar on 6 November at 10.00am AEDT, online via Zoom. The event, free for AIP members, friends, and industry colleagues, will focus on the future of soft plastics recycling in Australia.

The webinar will provide updates on the progress of an industry-led soft plastics recycling scheme, spearheaded by the Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC). The scheme, which aims to recycle hard-to-recycle soft plastics, such as food packaging, has undergone trials from 2022 to 2023.

In what the AFGC calls a critical initiative, the Product Stewardship Scheme is bringing together brand owners, retailers, and recyclers across the soft plastics supply chain. The scheme aims to drive investment into new recycling technologies in Australia, turning used soft plastics into new products, including food-grade packaging.

The scheme is also introducing kerbside pilots that make it easier for households to recycle soft plastics, potentially increasing the volume of soft plastics being captured for recycling. The upcoming webinar will discuss these milestones, future plans, and timelines for wider implementation.

Barry Cosier, director of Sustainability at the AFGC, and Aaron Rodman, associate director of NPRS Finance and Operations at the AFGC, will speak at the event. Attendees will also earn points toward the Certified Packaging Professional designation.
