The Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association (APPMA), the show owner of APPEX 2024, has appointed Dr Rym Kachouri as chair of the APPEX 2024 Working Group. Kachouri is an industry-elected board director for APPMA, and GM – Service and Agency Products at Foodmach.

The working group is comprised of representatives from the APPMA Board, the APPMA management team and the Exhibitions and Trade Fairs (ETF) project team. The members combine their skills to develop and drive the strategies, sales, marketing and operations required to successfully deliver the APPEX event and associated activities.

APPEX – the Australasian Processing & Packaging Expo – which will be staged for the first time from 12-15 March next year, represents the transition of the former AUSPACK exhibition into an all-of-industry processing and packaging expo. The expo has been designed to showcase and support the total industry including machinery, ancillary equipment, materials and packaging, food processing and industry services.

With APPEX on track to be over 50 per cent larger than AUSPACK 2022, including over 350 exhibiting companies, with 12,000 plus visitors expected and plans in place to deliver a unique on the floor experience previously unseen in Australia, this is an exhibition not to be missed.

It’s also a lot to organise, considering that the show includes The APPMA Awards of Excellence, which are announced at the APPEX Gala event. The awards recognise excellence, leadership and best practice throughout Australia’s processing and packaging industry. All finalists in the awards are promoted pre, during and post APPEX. The award categories include machinery manufacturing, machinery import, system integration solutions, digital innovation, sustainability, packaging design and emerging leadership, so companies have plenty of opportunities to participate. Submissions for the awards close in October.

Dr Rym Kachouri said, “It is both a privilege and honour to be able to give back to the industry. Being on the APPMA Board and Chair of the APPEX Working Group takes a lot of time, but it is hugely rewarding. I’m very proud of what our team is achieving.”

Food & Drink Business

A national network for young grape and wine professionals has been launched, set to foster the next generation of winemakers, viticulturists, cellar door staff, wine judges and other roles in Australia’s wine sector.

A new bill was introduced to Parliament on 19 November, which offers a framework for regulating the sale or importation of organic goods in Australia, and stronger opportunities for exporting organic products.

The Senate Economics Committee has rejected the Food Donations Bill that proposed a tax offset for companies donating excess food to food relief agencies rather than dumping it. While the bill had the potential to deliver the equivalent of 100 million meals to food relief organisations, the committee said it had “serious concerns” including the bill’s “generous” tax concessions. Food relief agencies and social welfare organisations have questioned the committee’s decision to reject the bill outright rather than make recommendations for amendments.
