Matthews Australasia launched three new technologies that have never been shown before in Australia, and drew strong interest from APPEX visitors.

Matthews CEO Mark Dingley said, “Matthews is now able to offer Australian manufacturers the world’s first black & white digital inkjet solution for paper-label replacement: the NoLabel Black & White Digital Inkjet Solution. We also now have the GSI Colorize CMYK+W, a full-process colour printing system plus white, for printing ultra vivid process colours on darker backgrounds, such as brown kraft.”

Dingley said NoLabel is ideally suited to print black and white, high-contrast digital barcodes, labels and logos directly onto packaging in a single pass and at high speed rates.

“NoLabel prints directly onto packaging, reducing costs and improving sustainability.”

Some of its key benefits include eliminating the cost of paper labels and ribbons; seamless integration into production lines; high-speed printing for increased efficiency; and SKU reduction and label rework elimination.

“And from the same family, we can also now offer manufacturers an inline printer to vibrantly print onto dark backgrounds.”

The GSI Colorize Inline Single Pass Printing system, featuring SmartWHITE technology, has some key benefits, such as vivid printing on dark backgrounds; increased production efficiency and throughput; real-time, on-demand changes; and limitless print possibilities

Both in-line labellers offer easy message creation, he says.

“These technologies will offer manufacturers the ability to meet production targets with superpowered processors, providing unequalled rendering speed and complex printing capabilities. And they mean manufacturers can print in more applications, such as brown or white corrugate, and non-porous substrates, like varnished or coated stock, plastics, film and the like.”

Hand-held hi-res printer

“The third game-changing technology that Matthews released this week at APPEX is a portable, a high-resolution printer.

“The edding Portable 12 is an ergonomically designed, compact printer that really redefines internal production and logistics processes. It’s perfect for off-the-line printing needs, and, as the ‘12’ suggests, it has a print height of up to 12mm.”

Some of the edding Portable 12’s key features are:

  • its ability to print barcodes, data matrix codes, texts and logos;
  • its maintenance-free cartridge system for flexible printing;
  • its positioning laser; and
  • being equipped with an original Metabo LiHD battery, which has 12-hour battery capacity to offer non-stop, razor-sharp printing at 600 dpi, with perfect adhesion to all surfaces.

“Matthews is pleased that these three real game-changer technologies are now part of the offering that we have for Australian manufacturers,” Dingley said.

Food & Drink Business

The Senate Economics Committee has rejected the Food Donations Bill that proposed a tax offset for companies donating excess food to food relief agencies rather than dumping it. While the bill had the potential to deliver the equivalent of 100 million meals to food relief organisations, the committee said it had “serious concerns” including the bill’s “generous” tax concessions. Food relief agencies and social welfare organisations have questioned the committee’s decision to reject the bill outright rather than make recommendations for amendments.

The winners of the 62nd annual Australian Export Awards were announced in Canberra yesterday, featuring three winners from the food sector – including dessert manufacturer Frosty Boy Global, in the Agribusiness, Food and Beverages category.

Mondelēz International has appointed Toby Smith as President Japan, Australia and New Zealand, with the incumbent, Darren O’Brien, appointed Global Chief Corporate and Government Affairs officer.
