McKenzie’s Foods has partnered with leading food and beverage packaging and processing company, Tetra Pak, to release a new range of pulses packaged in Tetra Recart.

According to Tetra Pak, the packaging solution not only provides greater convenience, but also has the lowest CO2 footprint on the market in Australia and New Zealand, verifies through LCA analysis.

McKenzie’s said the practicality of Tetra Recart is "unmatched" for its wet pulses, as it offers a packaging solution that is easy to open and store, and is optimised to ensure food stays fresher for longer, which ultimately helps to reduce food wastage without the need for added preservatives.

McKenzie’s new range in Tetra Recart is available exclusively at Woolworths stores nationwide.

“McKenzie’s has been the market leader of dried pulses in Australia for decades, however, we recognise that not all home cooks have time in their day to soak dried pulses before they begin preparing their meal,” said Micaela McGee, marketing and innovation manager at McKenzie’s.

“Offering consumers a pre-cooked option for pulses has been a goal of ours for some time and part of this process included searching for suitable eco-conscious packaging.

“Tetra Recart is the perfect solution – we’re thrilled to offer a delicious, ready-to-eat product that caters to the needs of eco-conscious and convenience-seeking Australians.”

Tetra Recart packaging is said to have up to six times less climate impact than cans when comparing the lifecycle of the two packaging options. It is 60 per cent lighter, occupies 30 per cent less shelf space, and reduces transport space by 20 per cent, reducing carbon emissions.

“McKenzie’s represents another iconic Australian brand which has chosen to welcome Tetra Pak on board as a packaging partner,” said Giancarlos Larocca, marketing director of Tetra Pak Oceania said.

“Supporting food and beverage brands, like McKenzie’s, as they transition to innovative and sustainable packaging solutions is a fundamental part of addressing challenges across food systems. This is something our team is innately passionate about, as we work to make food safe and available around the world.”

McKenzie’s new range in Tetra Recart is available exclusively at Woolworths stores nationwide from $2.20 per unit.

The range includes five varieties of high quality, pre-cooked pulses that are ready to serve, including Cannellini Beans, Chickpeas, Lentils, Red Kidney Beans and a Three Bean Mix.

Recently, in an industry-first for the Australian pet food sector, Tetra Recart was incorporated in Prime100's new premium dog food product line. And, in the first commercial adoption in Australia of the packaging innovation, the Rosella brand broke category convention and moved away from metal cans for its new soup range.

PKN's Lindy Hughson also recently spoke to Boris Munster, managing director of Tetra Pak Oceania, on the PKN Podcast about sustainable packaging leadership, as well as on fostering sustainability and collaboration in packaging.

The Senate Economics Committee has rejected the Food Donations Bill that proposed a tax offset for companies donating excess food to food relief agencies rather than dumping it. While the bill had the potential to deliver the equivalent of 100 million meals to food relief organisations, the committee said it had “serious concerns” including the bill’s “generous” tax concessions. Food relief agencies and social welfare organisations have questioned the committee’s decision to reject the bill outright rather than make recommendations for amendments.
