The Domestic & Household Packaging Design of the Year award recognises organisations that have designed innovative packaging and/or materials, packaging within domestic and household items, toys, stationery, gifts, clothing, garden equipment, decorating.

Two high commendations were awarded in the PIDA 2022 Domestic & Household Packaging Design category, to Nestlé Purina Australia for Nestlé Purina Total Care (Pet Accessories) and Close the Loop Group for the Koh Kerbside Recyclable Spout Pouch Refill Pack.

Packsize was awarded a bronze for Packsize Australia and Kaboodle, while Earthwise Group received silver recognition for the Earthwise Eco Laundry Scoop Innovation.

Triumphing with the gold award, and its second win, was Production Packaging Innovations for the Fig & Bloom Floral Shipper Box designed to house luxury bouquets.

The bespoke, monochromatic shipper box is 100% FSC-certified, made from B-flute corrugated board with white top Kraft liner, which is fully recyclable and made from a renewable resource, as well as being composed of 60 per cent recycled material. The design provides a moisture-resistant solution, allows adequate air to flow, enabling the blooms to stay fresh for longer and arrive as intended.

Structurally, the design includes an additional internal fold-over flap and an insert that is easily locked in the side double wall of the box. This insert creates a separate space for the flower stems and the bouquet wrapping of the bouquet while providing strong structural reinforcement to the box. The insert is of a minimalistic design, using the least possible amount of board and produced with the surplus of material from the production of the body of the structure ensuring flowers arrive at the doorsteps of the consumer in the same pristine condition that they left the store.

The Senate Economics Committee has rejected the Food Donations Bill that proposed a tax offset for companies donating excess food to food relief agencies rather than dumping it. While the bill had the potential to deliver the equivalent of 100 million meals to food relief organisations, the committee said it had “serious concerns” including the bill’s “generous” tax concessions. Food relief agencies and social welfare organisations have questioned the committee’s decision to reject the bill outright rather than make recommendations for amendments.

The winners of the 62nd annual Australian Export Awards were announced in Canberra yesterday, featuring three winners from the food sector – including dessert manufacturer Frosty Boy Global, in the Agribusiness, Food and Beverages category.
