With the end of the year fast approaching, Australian plant owners should be forward-planning for shutdowns and maintenance activities, according to Martin Broglia, managing director at Bonfiglioli Australia.

He said that achieving the best outcome on a planned shutdown requires a detailed plan of action, with clear goals, and the plan should include comprehensive work scoping, so all stakeholders have clearly defined objectives. 

“Planned maintenance and shutdowns go a long way to ensuring that production quality is not affected by costly and time-consuming equipment failure or downtime,” Broglia said. 

“Workflows and communications are critical, as is a detailed report. Regular shutdowns provide plant owners with the opportunity to spot potential issues – such as equipment wear – early and take preventative action.”

To ensure smooth shutdowns and maintenance, plant owners are advised to partner with suppliers who can offer an extensive array of products, large stockholding and complete service. 

Broglia said that it is also wise to order components and equipment ahead of the holiday season. 

“Over the last few years, we have experienced an influx of orders placed before the festive season break,” he continued. 

“This year, we have reminded our customers that to avoid disappointment, they should place orders by early December.”

The Senate Economics Committee has rejected the Food Donations Bill that proposed a tax offset for companies donating excess food to food relief agencies rather than dumping it. While the bill had the potential to deliver the equivalent of 100 million meals to food relief organisations, the committee said it had “serious concerns” including the bill’s “generous” tax concessions. Food relief agencies and social welfare organisations have questioned the committee’s decision to reject the bill outright rather than make recommendations for amendments.  

The winners of the 62nd annual Australian Export Awards were announced in Canberra yesterday, featuring three winners from the food sector – including dessert manufacturer Frosty Boy Global, in the Agribusiness, Food and Beverages category.
