The EU has released a report to develop a framework for assessing the recyclability of packaging under the ambit of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation Proposal.

It said the aim of this study was to develop technical recommendations for possible elements and parameters of a methodology to assess recyclability of packaging, referred to in Article 6 of the EC proposal for a Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, to support the co-decision process.

The World Packaging Organisation's Global Packaging Design for Recycling Guide was listed as one of the two top guides globally that had the most detail covering all substrates.

The main objective of the report is to identify relevant functionalities of the packaging materials that could be considered in a design-for-recycling (DfR) methodology.

The proposal consists of a list of elements and parameters, a detailed description of each parameter and the relevance for recyclability.
