Six Australian pack designs – which last year won gold, silver and bronze in the Australian Packaging Design Awards (APDA) – have gone on to achieve WorldStar recognition at the World Packaging Organisation's (WPO) design awards.

These Australian brand owners joined packaging companies from around the world at the 2015 WorldStar Awards ceremony and cocktail reception in Milan, Italy last week.

Coca-Cola Amatil was recognised for its environmentally friendly packaging solution for the iced coffee range, Barista Bros. It commercialised a dry aseptic process to minimise chemical usage and hazards, resulting in one of the first aseptic dairy PET packs filled in Australia to deliver a six-month shelf life.

Blackmores was awarded a WorldStar for its user-friendly Amber Bulk Packs in the health and beauty category. The packs are stackable for shelf displays, with the indent in the base acting as a locking system.

The Botanical Food Company won for its Gourmet Garden herb and spice system which includes stackable, clickable pots and resealable pinch pouches.
Orora Limited was a winner for both its 2014 FIFA World Cup McDonalds Large Fries and Mondelez International's Cadbury 135g Gift Card and Shelf Ready Packaging.

And Pact Group scooped an award for its Anchor Light Proof bottle, developed in conjunction with Fonterra New Zealand. Delivering 100 per cent light-proof packaging, the bottle integrates an induction foil-sealed cap that keeps light out at the bottleneck and finishes with three light-protective layers that make up the body.

Judging originally took place on 19 November, when representatives from 17 packaging associations and members of WPO judged 265 packaging projects from 37 countries. These entries were then narrowed down to about 90 overall international winners.

The WorldStar Awards help illustrate the continual advancement of packaging design and technology, and winners are based on the judges' consensus that a package is superior in its own right and better in its class in execution or innovation by comparison.
