UK provider of printed flexible packaging films, TCL Packaging, has developed a new micro-perforated printed lidding film to create the best conditions for soft fruit.

The films permit precise gas and moisture transmission rates, effective tray sealing and maximum protection from contaminants for the contents. This is an important upgrade from standard hole-punched lidding films.

“Fruit lidding film is often perceived as a relatively simple product but developing it is a complex task. It requires an in-depth understanding of the dynamic interactions established between the product, the atmosphere generated within the package and the package itself – and all the possible variants,” TCL technical director, Markus Jarvstrom, explained.

“The transfer of packaged soft fruit from ambient to chilled storage also presents an additional technical challenge for lidding film to avoid misting.  We also encourage pre-printing because many growers are not aware that a secondary labelling process can impede the lidding film performance and affect their product.”

The company has also a contract with Uteco in Italy for the supply of a new Onyx 808GL central impression flexographic printing press. The equipment will be installed in the company’s new factory in Telford, towards the middle of the year.

Increased production efficiencies will be achieved by the press through in-line slitting of large diameter film reels removing the need for post processing. It has an extended drying tunnel for faster speeds, shorter run down times and automatic adjustment of impression pressure to eradicate print errors and minimise film waste.

The machine will be the first of its kind whose specifications were developed between the two companies.

Jarvstrom commented, “From the beginning we specified a video inspection system that would deliver an increased resolution image of the print on a larger screen. This displays a finer level of detail on line and full web width visibility for maximising quality. We also required a drive system able to offer independent, even rotation of the plate sleeve drive motors to give optimum dot quality and a sharper impression.”

Uteco is represented in Australia by Flexo Australia.
