A compact reusable sunscreen applicator called SunSmudg has scooped a Good Design Award in Sydney.

Designed by Outerspace Design and Louise Johnson Design, the product's packaging is designed to stand out on the shelf and distinguish itself from other categories.

The floating design aims to make the product the hero, giving the consumer a 360 degree view of the product while providing branding opportunity.

Targeted at mothers of children under 12, the product can be filled with 15-20mls of the user's preferred sunscreen – including tinted varieties – for a mess-free sponge application. The fully recyclable packaging eliminates frustration and is aimed at making the opening experience easy and enjoyable.

The design provides clear information on its benefits and the abstract blue branding sleeve contrasts with the yellow product, denoting sunlight, sea and sky. The rounded rectangular shape complements the product's outline, and there is a built-in mirror inside.

A push-pull seal keeps the sunscreen securely in the reservoir, and the sunscreen can be refilled repeatedly.

Promoted as a more convenient, less messy solution for applying sunscreen, SunSmudg is designed to be fun for children, easy for mums, and convenient for sportspeople who wish to avoid greasy hands.

The Good Design Awards were presented at a gala night in Sydney in conjunction with the Vivid Light festival last week.
