In response to the growing concern over single-use plastics' environmental impact, sustainable packaging manufacturer, Biotuff, is offering compostable produce bags as its "answer to Australia's plastic bag problem".

Biotuff says it produces certified biodegradable and compostable produce bags, which are designed to address the environmental challenges posed by traditional plastic bags. It claims that its bags have a significantly lower carbon footprint, and are created using renewable and plant-based materials.

Nadia Steele, Biotuff spokesperson, said, "They reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the overall environmental impact," Steele said. "Unlike traditional plastic bags, compostable bags are designed to completely break down into non-toxic components when exposed to composting conditions, leaving behind zero microplastic residue.”

"Composting is the way of the future, and we encourage the Federal government to take more action in this sector, to allow communities to transform their food waste and single-use plastics into nutrient-rich soil," Steele added.

"All single-use plastic should be replaced by 100 per cent compliant and certified compostable options, making it easier on the retail sector, and the consumer, to make a sustainable difference in their everyday needs."

Biotuff believes Australia can completely abolish the need for toxic single-use plastics, with one streamlined sustainable option – compostable soft plastics and composting collection.

"The soft plastic recycling system is confusing to the everyday retailer and consumer," Steele commented. "One national framework is needed to take the pressure off the consumer and retail outlets to make the right choice regarding our environment. A complete abolishment nationwide of single-use plastics, alongside more accessible composting facilities and composting plastics, is urgently required."

Biotuff says one of the advantages of its compostable produce bags is versatility and durability, with the company stating, "they are designed to be as strong and reliable as conventional plastic bags, ensuring a seamless, convenient and sustainable shopping experience for consumers across Australia".

Steele said, "According to a recent report by ABC News Australia, states and territories in Australia have been actively stepping up their efforts in the war on waste, targeting single-use plastics as a priority. This movement has raised public awareness about the urgent need for eco-friendly alternatives, sparking a demand for innovative solutions."
