Detpak partnered with Bio Gro and IMG Events to facilitate, for what it says was the first time ever, a closed loop waste management system for the Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival, which was held on 2 October.

Detpak supplied 250,000 Eco-Products compostable cups, featuring Gatorade branding, as the electrolyte partner for this year’s event. The course cups were available at all drink stations for the duration of the event. After their use, these cups were then collected by volunteers and transferred to Bio Gro’s commercial composting facilities to be converted, along with other green waste, into nutrient rich compost.

“We’re pleased to support the Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival in delivering a closed loop event. Partnerships like these help us to make a positive impact for our people, our partners and our planet,” said Helen Ford, marketing manager at Eco-Products.

Detpak says its Eco-Products offer an innovative and extensive portfolio of plant-based takeaway packaging, inspired by the need to maximise environmental footprint, and delivering a change for good.

The range is made from sustainable, renewable raw materials, and is either compostable or recyclable.

“We continue to initiate and adopt new procedures that ensure sustainability is a business imperative,” explained Paul Mudge, commercial director of events at IME Events.

“The Detpak and Bio Gro partnership and the collection of our event cups is a great example of how we can make effective change through collaboration. As an event, we have the opportunity to show environmental and industry leadership.”

According to Stephen van Schaik, managing director of Bio Gro, the compostable cups are a fantastic initiative supporting another circular outcome.

“Working closely with companies like IMG Events and Detpak on environmentally sound initiatives enables us to support our business model of circular economic outcomes through recovering, refining and reapplying quality products from organics,” van Schaik concluded.
