Flexible packaging and labels maker Constantia Flexibles – which owns Pemara Labels – has chalked up an important environmental accolade, achieving a place on CDP’s 2019 A List for climate change.

Constantia, a major manufacturer of flexible packaging and labels, was commended for its climate action last year. The company is one of 179 organisations on the A List out of thousands that were scored.

CDP is a global non-profit that runs an environmental disclosure system. Each year, the organisation takes information gathered in its annual reporting process and scores companies and cities based on their progress towards environmental leadership. The organisation thereby incentivises action on climate change, forests and water security.

Constantia was recognised for its actions to cut emissions, mitigate climate risks, and develop the low-carbon economy, based on the data submitted by the company through CDP’s 2019 climate change questionnaire. This year more than 8400 organisations submitted data to CDP.

Constantia Flexibles is based in Vienna and reported €1.5bn in sales in 2018, with 7 per cent of its sales in the Middle East, Africa, and Australia regions. Back in 2015, Constantia Flexibles acquired Melbourne-based Pemara Labels Group.

CDP uses a detailed and independent methodology to assess the companies, allocating a score of A to D based on the comprehensiveness of disclosure; awareness and management of environmental risks; and demonstration of best practices associated with environmental leadership.

Constantia Flexibles vice-president, group sustainability Thomas Greigeritsch said sustainability and climate-related topics are a fundamental part of the company’s business focus.

“After improving our score continuously over the past years, we are very proud that we are included in CDP’s A List for the first time,” he said.

“This external recognition is a further confirmation of our high level of environmental stewardship and we are committed to continue on this path.”

Constantia Flexibles has committed to reducing absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 24 per cent by 2030 and by 49 per cent by 2050 from a 2015 base-year.

CDP CEO Paul Simpson congratulated the 179 companies that had achieved a position on the A List this year.

“The scale of the business risks from the climate emergency, deforestation and water insecurity are vast – as are the opportunities for addressing them – and it’s clear the private sector has a vital role to play at this critical time,” he said.

“The A List companies are leading the market in corporate sustainability, tackling environmental risks and setting themselves up to thrive in tomorrow’s economy.”
