The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) has thrown its support behind the inaugural State of Sustainability report by Empauer, which identifies key barriers to sustainable packaging.

The report provides information about the current state of play in the industry, and highlights that packaging designers and technologists need greater support from management to enable a shift toward improved sustainable packaging development, national president Dr Carol Kilcullen-Lawrence said.

While participants in the packaging industry have indicated that sustainability is important to their company, the top four stumbling blocks to designing sustainable packaging are:

  1. Lack of support from senior management
  2. Lack of clarity on how to communicate to consumers the benefits
  3. Difficulty in proving the business case
  4. The time and effort to implement a strategy.

"This report also shows we have a lot more work to do in the packaging industry to ensure companies better understand the benefits of developing sustainable packaging for their business and the environment," Kilcullen-Lawrence said.
