PKN talks... Striking Gold: the story behind the award-winning Oasis spice packaging with Michael Grima of qDesign Enterprises.

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, Managing Editor & Publisher of PKN Packaging News, and Michael Grima, Director of qDesign Enterprises discuss circular design thinking and the multiple award-winning Oasis Spice Shaker packaging design for Melbourne retailer Oasis Bakery.

Grima, who also refers to himself as the "Chief Cat Herder" at qDesign, has 30 years' experience in the industrial design industry with 28 of those focused on packaging. Hughson and Grima talk about the three awards that were won at the 2021 Packaging Innovation & Design Awards for the Oasis spice packaging, and everything that went into getting it to be such a high-quality packaging format that delivers on sustainability criteria as well as brand engagement.

They also discuss the main goals that needed to be achieved in this design process, and how a "Refill, Return and Recycle" focus was high on the Oasis team's priority list. Grima talks about the issues with the previous package design and then the extensive research and product testing it took to make the new design perfect. The episode wraps up with a discussion of the consumer reaction to the new packaging and a look at what is next to come for the qDesign team.
