PKN talks... industry collaboration and efforts to implement the circular economy with Sanjay Dayal of Pact Group.

In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, talks with Sanjay Dayal, CEO of Pact Group, on Pact's role in industry collaborations and its alignment with the circular economy.

We start the episode with a discussion on Pact's ability to lead the circular economy and its work across the value chain to produce and use recycled materials along with producing reusable products. This leads to Pact's role in instigating cross-industry collaborations, many with organisations that compete with each other, to increase the levels of recycling being performed within Australia and New Zealand.

Sanjay also covers Pact's market research on consumer willingness to support sustainability and recycling, including moving to a four bin system for recycling. This progresses to a discussion on government's role in implementing the circular economy, lessons learned from foreign initiatives and the benefits being realised through government purchasing policies and mandates.

Finally, we review the impact of COVID on Pact's operations and the changes Sanjay has implemented in Pact to drive improvements over all. We wrap with Sanjay stating the importance of getting involved in the circular economy to help meet Australia's 2025 National Packaging Targets.

The Senate Economics Committee has rejected the Food Donations Bill that proposed a tax offset for companies donating excess food to food relief agencies rather than dumping it. While the bill had the potential to deliver the equivalent of 100 million meals to food relief organisations, the committee said it had “serious concerns” including the bill’s “generous” tax concessions. Food relief agencies and social welfare organisations have questioned the committee’s decision to reject the bill outright rather than make recommendations for amendments.

The winners of the 62nd annual Australian Export Awards were announced in Canberra yesterday, featuring three winners from the food sector – including dessert manufacturer Frosty Boy Global, in the Agribusiness, Food and Beverages category.

Mondelēz International has appointed Toby Smith as President Japan, Australia and New Zealand, with the incumbent, Darren O’Brien, appointed Global Chief Corporate and Government Affairs officer.
