With six weeks to go until the Australasian Processing & Packaging Expo – APPEX 2024 – opens its doors at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre on 12 March 2024, anticipation is mounting.

Sustainability, efficiency and automation will be front and centre when leading manufacturers from across Australia and New Zealand converge on the MCEC for the inaugural APPEX 2024, to be held from 12-15 March.

The packaging and processing’s industry’s excitement is palpable, as over 400 exhibitors finalise their plans for showcasing innovation to an expected crowd of 12,000 visitors from across a broad spectrum of manufacturing industries.

“This will be the largest B2B trade show for our industry ever to be held in Australia with the widest range of working machinery on the floor,” said Mark Dingley, chair of the Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association (APPMA), the owner of the show.

“It is a showcase of the total processing and packaging sector with a focus on the latest technology and best practice. It is an unprecedented opportunity for knowledge exchange delivered by industry, for industry.“

Exhibitors will showcase the latest equipment, technology and innovation in machinery, ancillary equipment, automation, materials and packaging, logistics, robotics, food processing and industry services.

“For manufacturers looking to boost their production lines through new machinery, automation and technology, this is the place to be,” Dingley added.

APPEX 2024, which is organised by Exhibitions & Trade Fairs (ETF), is set to take over all 20 bays of the MCEC and will be divided into zones to help attendees find products and services of interest to them.

The event will offer new networking areas including food and beverage hubs and APPEX restaurants, designed to allow visitors and exhibitors to connect, network and to enjoy their day at the event.

APPEX 2024 will feature a series of educational initiatives and opportunities including Meat Industry Day, led by a collaboration of partners comprising the Australian Meat Industry Council (AMIC), Australian Meat Processor Corporation (AMPC), and Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA).

There will also be food and beverage-focused sessions as part of the Food Industry Solution Series, and presentations from Robotics Australia exploring the role and future of robotics in processing and packaging.

Gala dinner

APPEX 2024 will culminate in the Awards of Excellence gala dinner, hosted by APPMA, on Wednesday 13 March. The judging panel for the 2024 Awards of Excellence has been announced, following the careful selection of 11 industry-leading professionals with expertise and experience in the packaging and processing sector.

“The APPMA Awards of Excellence is the national awards program for the Australian packaging and processing industry, recognising excellence, innovation, leadership and best practice,” said Dingley.

“The gala dinner, expected to host more than 700 industry guests, is very much the ‘event of the year’ for our industry and everyone involved.

The event is already 50% sold. Tickets are available here.

The Senate Economics Committee has rejected the Food Donations Bill that proposed a tax offset for companies donating excess food to food relief agencies rather than dumping it. While the bill had the potential to deliver the equivalent of 100 million meals to food relief organisations, the committee said it had “serious concerns” including the bill’s “generous” tax concessions. Food relief agencies and social welfare organisations have questioned the committee’s decision to reject the bill outright rather than make recommendations for amendments.

The winners of the 62nd annual Australian Export Awards were announced in Canberra yesterday, featuring three winners from the food sector – including dessert manufacturer Frosty Boy Global, in the Agribusiness, Food and Beverages category.

Mondelēz International has appointed Toby Smith as President Japan, Australia and New Zealand, with the incumbent, Darren O’Brien, appointed Global Chief Corporate and Government Affairs officer.
