PKN’s first issue for 2025 is hitting desks and, as ever, is full of news and in-depth features, including on-the-floor coverage of major events Pack Expo and All4Pack, as well as the latest developments in Sustainable Packaging, and Pack & Label Printing.
Hot off the press, the PKN Packaging News January-February 2025 issue is on its way to you in the mail and available online for your convenience.
Starting off with our comprehensive events coverage: first up, the packaging industry’s biggest global trade show in 2024, Pack Expo (page 26), took place in Chicago in November, and with 2700 exhibitors and 45,000 attendees, the event provided an unparalleled opportunity to explore innovations and trends shaping the future of packaging. Then, at All4Pack Emballage Paris in November last year, more than 1000 exhibitors and brands presented tangible solutions and new ideas that mirrored the commitment of the entire industry to an eco-friendly future (page 32).
FEATURES
In our Cover Story, PKN reports on the new in-line digital label technology developed by Jet Technologies, which printed and produced the embellishing and finishing on the exclusive Yaffa 100 wine labels (page 19). As an extension of the cover story, we shine a spotlight on our parent company, Yaffa Media, which celebrates a centenary of storytelling this year. PKN was in fact one of the earliest acquisitions back in the 1960s, and has now served the packaging industry for close on 65 years (page 20).
In Sustainability, Visual Media Association’s Kellie Northwood writes that there is much to be optimistic about in 2025, especially in relation to fibre-based packaging delivering innovation, opportunity and sustainability to Australia (page 16).
Then, in Sustainable Packaging, Orora has started its glass wine bottle manufacturing operations at its newly rebuilt oxygen-fuelled glass furnace in Gawler, SA (page 34); and TomKat, the innovator behind the KoolPak reusable packaging solution, is relocating its manufacturing to Thailand (page 35).
And finally, in Pack & Label Printing, HP Industrial Print’s Haim Levit shares his observations for the labels and packaging industry after drupa, and considers how intelligent automation will evolve this sector in 2025 (page 36).
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE…
As always, rounding out the issue are our regular sections: Industry Insight sees the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO)’s release its latest Packaging Consumption and Recovery Data report (page 12); Tech Speak sees PIDA Award winners from the ANZ region receive the fourth highest number of wins in the world in the latest round of the WorldStar Packaging Awards (page 14); for People in Packaging, PKN speaks to sustainability champion, Damian Smyth, environment and sustainability manager at Labelmakers, about his achievements (page 38); in Supplier Spotlight, Spiro Taktikos, MD Oceania at Markem-Imaje, takes a closer look at why producers and retailers should use GS1 Digital Link 2D barcode (page 40); and we highlight the upcoming industry events to mark on your calendar in What’s On (page 42).
And finally, in the News: Orora’s $1.77bn OPS sale goes through (page 6); the P/E takeover deal for Close the Loop fails (page 6); Packamama secures $100k grant for Aussie wine packaging (page 7); Australian Open 2025 swaps single-use plastics for reusables (page 7); Opal’s Maryvale Mill in lockout (page 8); Tassal cuts EPS with Visy’s cardboard prawn packs (page 8); and in News Extra, we discuss Packaging reform: renewed calls for action (page 10).
