PKN’s final issue for 2022 reviews the year that was in packaging with our Headline Makers feature, covers our recent Women in Packaging and Print21+PKN LIVE events, as well as the global drinktec and K-Fair, and highlights the latest news on innovations, investment and advancements the industry is making in the realm of Food Packaging and the Circular Economy.

Hot off the press, the PKN Packaging News November-December 2022 issue is on its way to you in the mail, and available online here for your convenience.

Paging through this issue will reveal an industry that is advancing and making changes through innovative actions, to move towards more efficient, sustainable and circular operations.

In our Cover Story on page 10, we take a closer look at the evolving circular story of Close the Loop Group, which has been firmly on the acquisition trail since its ASX-listing in 2021.

In our Headline Makers section, we feature the highlights of 2022, which was another eventful year for the packaging sector, with the return of in-person events, major deals signed, new appointments made, innovations launched, and sustainability and circularity yet again taking centre stage (page 52).

In-person event coverage is plentiful in this issue, starting with our sold-out Women in Packaging (page 16) event, where we champion the women in our industry who are walking the talk in sustainable packaging; and our Print21+PKN LIVE (page 26), which saw a succession of brand owners and print service providers step up to share how their innovative use of digitally printed packaging is driving sales growth.

Our coverage of global packaging events includes drinktec (page 46), where Dominique Huret reveals the packaging concepts that caught her eye at the show; and K-Fair (page 48), where Michael Grima shares his insights on new products and the future direction for plastics packaging.

We also look into what’s new in Food Packaging, examining Jamestrong Packaging’s series of investments in high-tech plant capacity, which enabled it to weather the storm of challenges that hit the infant formula market recently (page 36); and unpacking Result Group’s new EcoMark Natural Branding – its laser system for non-contact coding on the skin of fruit and veg, which could reinvent coding and marking of single items in the fresh produce aisles (page 38).

And finally, on the Circular Economy, we report on Orora’s new $25m glass beneficiation plant in SA which is set to recycle 150,000 tonnes of post-consumer glass each year (page 40); Schulz Organic Dairy's engagement of Rhima Australia to develop a bespoke bottle washing system to support its circular ambitions for its glass packaging (page 42); and plastics food packaging manufacturer Genfac Plastics, which has become the first APCO signatory to emboss the ARL on its locally made take-away food packaging range (page 44).

BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE…

Rounding out the issue are our regular sections: Industry Insight, where PKN reports on the groundswell of support from industry for the recently suspended REDcycle program; Tech Speak, where we unpack all that was seen on OJI Fibre Solutions’ 5-Star Green Star-rated converting facility's recent virtual tour for AIP members; People in Packaging, where we speak to new APCO CEO Chris Foley about the organisation’s progress and his plans; The Bottom Line, where Paul Allen educates us on a “pickle” of a different kind, and shows how it can be used to make customers happy; and Design, where we get a glimpse into the successes of Mela Creative, which celebrated three decades in business this year.
