Victoria’s container deposit scheme (CDS) has integrated advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology to enhance recycling efficiency and reduce waste, deploying CountAIner, an AI-powered recycling machine now operational at the CDS Vic Depot in Dandenong South.

Developed in collaboration with a leading waste management organisation and a Canadian engineering firm specialising in recycling systems, CountAIner is capable of processing up to 1500 containers per minute. This high-speed system, the first of its kind to be deployed outside North America, leverages machine learning to identify, count, and sort eligible containers with unprecedented accuracy and efficiency.

Since launching on 1 November 2023, more than 1 billion containers have been returned across the state.
Since launching on 1 November 2023, more than one billion containers have been returned across the state.

The deployment of CountAIner is another step forward for Victoria’s CDS, which has already achieved impressive outcomes. In its inaugural year, the scheme facilitated the return of over one billion containers, injecting more than AU$100 million into the hands of Victorian residents. At the same time, the initiative reports it has halved the amount of litter sent to landfill.

By integrating AI technology in the recycling process, the scheme is poised to further amplify these benefits. The machine’s ability to streamline container sorting not only increases throughput but also reduces operational costs, paving the way for further improving recycling outcomes across the state.

The adoption of CountAIner signals a transformative shift in recycling operations, not just in Victoria but potentially worldwide. Its implementation at the Dandenong South depot is set to offer valuable insights into the role of AI in waste management, showcasing how technology can drive greater efficiency and sustainability.

Food & Drink Business

Perth-based food technology company, Whole., has launched a Pre-Series A investor round, aiming to commercialise its proprietary WINX (Whole Ingredient Nutrient Extraction) platform, which transforms plant ingredients into functional food formats.

The Queensland government has released a targeted plan to strengthen the state’s economic ties with the Pacific region. Delivery of the Queensland-Pacific Trade and Investment Strategy 2026-2028 will be led by Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ).

Container refunds collected through Queensland’s Containers for Change have contributed to 200,000 meals for people facing food insecurity, according to OzHarvest.
