Henkel Adhesive Technologies has teamed up with Panverta CPP to develop sustainable packaging solutions for dry foods, enhancing barrier performance and reducing waste.

By improving the oxygen barrier properties of metallised cast polypropylene (CPP) and CPP with aluminium oxide coatings, they have enabled the replacement of multi-material packaging with more efficient mono-material polypropylene (PP) alternatives. This collaboration significantly reduces the number of packaging layers needed for products like flour, rice, and pasta, which require airtight, light-proof, and moisture-proof packaging.

Central to this development is Henkel’s recyclable Loctite Liofol oxygen barrier coating. This coating supports a mono-material design, reducing the materials needed for food packaging without compromising barrier integrity.

Certified as recyclable by cyclos-HTP and recognised by the Association of Plastic Recyclers, the coating improves the recycling quality of packaging by eliminating the need for separation into different components, according to Henkel. It can be applied to oriented polypropylene (OPP) and polyethylene (PE) films at high speeds with excellent transparency, offering flexibility for packaging manufacturers.

Marcus Hengky, sales manager at Panverta, stated, “Thanks to the collaboration with Henkel, we have been able to increase the added value of our product portfolio and appeal to brand owners seeking thinner and more efficient solutions made from a single material.”

The new packaging will be showcased at Tokyo Pack 2024 from 23 to 25 October, where Henkel will present standing pouches and laminated reels at their booth.
