NCI's executive director and proprietor, Michael Tyrrell, has died at just 54.
Tyrrell's entire career belonged to NCI. He began there as a management trainee in 1979, directly from school.
During the next 36 years, Tyrrell's experience and knowledge of the business grew at many of the company’s manufacturing sites.
He progressed quickly through the ranks and occupied a range of senior management roles before following in his father’s footsteps to become managing director in 2000.
Tyrrell was a champion of innovation and pioneered the company’s successful expansion in leading edge plastic packaging and metal decoration facilities. He embraced all forms of new technology with enthusaism, driving important advancements in the company’s information systems, product development and factory designs.
He was also a passionate advocate for, and believer in, the packaging industry, and worked on the boards of the Packaging Council of Australia, including terms as President and Treasurer, and the Aerosol Association of Australia.
He placed great value on the company’s 60 year old heritage and was committed to its maintenance. He placed great emphasis on retaining meaningful connections and ongoing engagement with NCI’s founders and past employees.
“Michael approached all tasks with great gusto and flair, always applying a ‘never give up’ attitude to even the most challenging situations. This stubborn persistence was rewarded in 2012 when he successfully privatised NCI, having been thwarted 9 years earlier,” his company said in its statement.
“An avid aviator, once world ranked windsurfer and a competitive mountain biker, Michael pursued his recreational activities with the same passion and commitment so evident in his work.”
“Michael will long be remembered as an esteemed colleague, friend and leader of NCI’s 700 employees and his energy, charm, humour and belief will be greatly missed by all.”
NCI's professional board and senior management will continue to use NCI's established processes and procedures to ensure the company continues the current pathway to future success.
“NCI and everyone associated with the company join in expressing profound condolences to Michael’s wife, Frauke, and to his mother, Billie, and sister, Alexandra.”
