Waterdrop was founded in 2016, and entered the Australian market in 2023.

The partnership aims to reduce single-use plastic waste by providing bespoke Player Bottles, which will allow players to refill directly on court with filtered Melbourne tap water. During the 2024 Australian Open, the initiative contributed to a 99 per cent reduction in single-use plastic in player areas and facilitated the refilling of over 5,600 litres (1,452 gallons) of water.

"Partnering with one of the biggest tennis events in the world is an incredible opportunity for us," said Martin Murray, founder and CEO of Waterdrop. "We are honoured to contribute to this prestigious event and bring more sustainability to the world of tennis, bottle by bottle."

Tennis Australia's chief commercial officer, Cedric Cornelis, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "With its focus on sustainability, it’s a great fit for the Australian Open and the Summer of Tennis." He noted that the tournament was the first Grand Slam to offer players local tap water at dedicated refill points, significantly reducing single-use plastic.

Waterdrop will participate in the Summer of Tennis tournaments, including the United Cup and Brisbane International, to promote sustainable hydration practices.

In addition to the sustainability efforts at the Australian Open, waterdrop has made strides in the tennis world through partnerships with various athletes, including Novak Djokovic, who serves as an investor and brand ambassador. As part of its commitment to sustainability, waterdrop has been involved in ATP tournaments, ensuring a plastic-free environment in player and fan areas.

The upcoming Australian Open will feature an exclusive Player Bottle designed in iconic tennis court blue, with a 1-litre capacity. This double-walled stainless steel bottle will keep drinks cool for up to 24 hours. Spectators will have the opportunity to purchase these bottles at the tournament and through pre-orders starting in mid-October.

Waterdrop promotes sustainable hydration by innovating products and partnerships, committing to collect and recycle two ocean-bound plastic bottles for every glass or steel bottle sold.
