BioPak is taking a decisive step towards sustainability by pledging to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by 2050. This commitment aligns with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and is detailed in the company's 2024 Sustainability Report.
The updated Emissions Reduction Plan focuses on cutting emissions from products, which currently make up 89 per cent of BioPak's total emissions. Gary Smith, BioPak CEO, said the company is shifting its approach to emissions reduction.

“For over a decade, we were proudly carbon-neutral certified. However, in 2022, we made a strategic shift away from traditional carbon offsetting. Instead of allocating one per cent of our profits to offsets, we now invest those funds into our Emission Reduction Plan, focusing on research, education, and advocacy to promote carbon reduction and composting across our markets,” Smith said.
BioPak's report also highlights its efforts to address PFAS, stating that the company removed PFAS additives from production in July 2024 and launched a full range of plant fibre products free from intentionally added PFAS. The report calls for stronger legislative action to eliminate these 'forever chemicals' from packaging.
Innovation in compostable packaging is another focal point. The company introduced Australia’s first PHA-lined cups and new aqueous solutions, including compostable sushi trays and sauce cups, in response to increasing single-use plastic bans.
Education is key to BioPak's strategy, as evidenced by its first consumer research report on attitudes towards compostable packaging and composting. It found that while Australians are eager to dispose of packaging responsibly, challenges remain in recognising compostable logos and obtaining council support. To address these issues, BioPak launched the Compost for Climate campaign.
The report also marks the formation of the BioPak Group, with fellow B Corps Huskee and decent packaging joining the company’s network.
“Our mission is to develop solutions that will help transition to a waste-free world. Over the next 12 months, we will focus on emissions reduction, product innovation, and education to drive meaningful change and champion circular solutions,” Smith said.
