Australian startup, The Boxed Beverage Company, has partnered with global food and beverage packaging company Tetra Pak, to launch Waterbox, which it describes as a sustainably packaged alkaline water, sourced directly from Cottonwood Springs in Victoria.

The packaging is Tetra Pak’s plant-based Tetra Top carton bottle, and the company says Waterbox has up to eight times less impact on climate change than traditional PET bottled water, across its entire lifecycle in Australia and New Zealand. Consumers can recycle the plant-based carton bottle at eligible kerbside collection points, where the bottles can be transported to a saveBOARD recycling facility, and turned into sustainable building materials for homes and offices.

Founded by two friends from Adelaide, the company describes the new product as being the result of growing consumer demand in Australia for sustainably packaged, and locally sourced products, with a lower environmental impact.

Stefanie Mazzone, director at The Boxed Beverage Company, said: “We are excited to be launching our first product, Waterbox. We have seen Aussie consumers seek more sustainable, on-the-go alternatives to traditionally packaged beverages, Waterbox represents our first step in addressing this demand, and empowering consumers to make a difference.”

The company says the carton can be collected by saveBOARD and repurposed as construction material.

“Working with our partner Tetra Pak, we are also proud to be able to source, process and package the product right here in Australia, further ensuring we are able to cater to Australians' focus on health and sustainability,” she added.

Boris Munster, managing director of Tetra Pak ANZ, said: “Tetra Pak is always looking for like-minded partners with shared goals and visions when it comes to bringing exciting product innovations into the market, as well as advancing the local circular economy.

“We are thrilled to partner with a homegrown challenger brand like The Boxed Beverage Company in bringing a new product into the Australian beverage industry, with our innovative and sustainable plant-based Tetra Top packaging. The Waterbox launch marks the start of our great partnership with The Boxed Beverage Company, with an even more exciting line-up of other product innovations to come later this year.”

The company adds that as part of its community focus, Waterbox has partnered with Variety, one of Australia’s oldest charity organisations with a mission to give all children the same opportunities in life. For every Waterbox sold, a donation will be made to Variety to support a wide range of aid offered to sick and disadvantaged children.

Waterbox (500ml) is available in selected Foodlands, Romeon’s and IGA outlets in South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia, and New South Wales from $2.50 per unit.
