Boomerang Alliance says the upcoming AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 in Australia, scheduled from 1-21 March, presents a timely opportunity for Football Australia to embrace sustainability by introducing reusable cups and containers at stadiums in Sydney, Perth, and the Gold Coast.
This approach mirrors initiatives seen at major sporting events like the 2024 Paris Olympics, UEFA European Football Championship in Germany, and the Australian Open, where reusable foodware systems have been implemented. These systems reduce costs, lower greenhouse gas emissions, conserve water, and eliminate plastic waste.

Toby Hutcheon, campaign manager at Boomerang Alliance, said, “Reuse is becoming standard practice for major sporting events and festivals around the world, and it is a practice being welcomed by the public.”
He added, “We look forward to Football Australia announcing that the Asian Cup will be making the switch to reuse.”
Hutcheon called for action, stating that Football Australia must ensure all host stadiums are equipped with collection and washing facilities. “If they have not already done so, Football Australia needs to act now and make sure that all stadiums hosting the AFC Women’s Asian Cup are able to provide spectators with reusable cups and containers. Collection and washing facilities need to be in place at the two Sydney stadiums, two Perth stadiums, and the Gold Coast Stadium. There are only 343 days to go.”
