Mars Food & Nutrition Australia has collaborated with Wellman Packaging, a specialist injection and blow moulder FMCG packaging supplier, to evolve its MasterFoods squeezy sauce bottles towards a more sustainable future.

The new-to-market MasterFoods sauce bottles make use of Wellman PET technology that will see the reduction of virgin plastic by 18 per cent. This change will help to cut Mars Food & Nutrition Australia’s virgin plastic use by 12.7 tonnes in 2024, with a view to further reductions in the future.

Mars Food & Nutrition Australia has a strong history working with Wellman and was confident to pursue a collaboration with the company – even from a distance through Covid-19.

After finessing the bottle design with industrial designer Brad Stebbing of Crafted Design, Mars Food & Nutrition Australia partnered with Wellman on the execution. The team worked through many iterations to perfect the packaging. The company says it was critical to get the ultimate ‘squeeziness’, which it says customers have come to love, just right.

Bill Heague, general manager Mars Food & Nutrition Australia, said that he is excited about this project and what further sustainability packaging initiatives this may lead to in the future.

“As a purpose-led business, we believe the world we want tomorrow is one where packaging never becomes waste. From evolving our own packaging to make it more sustainable, to working across the value chain to build a truly circular economy, no single business can do this alone. We can only make true progress through collaborating with others to find new, innovative and exciting ways to meet our shared goals,” Heague said

“We are proud of our partnership with Wellman, which continues to enable both businesses to grow for the future.”

“This new initiative, which has so far helped us to use 18 per cent less plastic in our original best loved MasterFoods squeezy sauce bottles, will also help us to add more recycled content in the future,” he said.

The new PET MasterFoods squeezy sauce bottles can now be found on supermarket shelves around the country.
